Things to keep in mind while you are on GLP-1.
-
Limit how much alcohol you drink. Alcohol can affect your blood sugar, and there is a risk that it may drop too low in combination with GLP-1, especially if you are a diabetic or drinking on an empty stomach. Alcohol may irritate our stomach and can worsen GI side effects.
-
Make sure your provider knows all medications you are taking before starting GLP-1. GLP-1 slows gastric emptying, potentially impacting the amount of oral medication absorbed in the body. Although clinical trials have not shown this to be significant with GLP-1, it is best to use caution when taking any oral medication.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is GLP-1?

-
GLP-1 is an injectable medication that, when combined with diet and exercise, helps control blood sugar in individuals with Type II diabetes.
-
GLP-1 belongs to a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists, which mimic the hormone GLP-1 to lower blood sugar levels after eating.

What is the hormone GLP-1?
GLP-1 is a hormone that plays a significant role in regulating blood sugar by:
-
Stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion, which promotes glucose uptake by the cells and stores sugar as glycogen. Inhibiting glucagon release, which slows down sugar release into the blood, allowing you to burn more fat.
-
Slowing gastric emptying, helping you feel full longer and reducing the desire to eat.
-
Promoting fat storage and signaling the body to build skeletal muscle.
How does GLP-1 work for weight loss?
GLP-1 agonists help control blood sugar while promoting weight loss. GLP-1 works by:
-
Slowing down how quickly your stomach empties food, making you feel full longer.
-
Stimulating insulin release from the pancreas.
-
Blocking the release of glucagon from the liver, which reduces blood sugar levels.
-
Together, these mechanisms help reduce hunger, decrease food intake, and support weight loss.
Does GLP-1 curb your appetite?
Yes! GLP-1 helps curb appetite by:
-
Slowing gastric emptying, which makes you feel full longer. Directly influencing the regulation of appetite through the GLP-1 hormone.

What is the starting dose of GLP-1 for weight loss?
-
All participants start on the lowest dose of 0.25 mg, injected subcutaneously into the belly fat weekly.
-
The dose increases by 0.25 mg every 4th week as tolerated.
-
The target dose studied for weight loss is 2.5 mg once weekly, which is higher than the dose typically approved for diabetes treatment.
GLP-1 is being studied for weight loss in individuals with:
A BMI greater than 30, or A BMI of 27 with at least one weight-related comorbidity.
How long does it take to lose weight on GLP-1?

-
Weight loss on GLP-1 is gradual as you slowly increase to the target dose.
-
In clinical trials, participants increased their dose to 2.5 mg as needed and began seeing significant weight loss.
-
In a 20-week Phase 3 trial, most participants reached the full dose and lost weight progressively as their dose increased.
-
Additional weight loss occurred over the remaining 48 weeks at the full dose.
Note: Weight loss results may vary. You will see the best outcomes when using GLP-1 in combination with a healthy diet and exercise. Some individuals may not tolerate the full dose due to side effects.
How long should you take GLP-1 for weight loss?
GLP-1 is currently approved for:
-
Obesity management.
-
Blood sugar control in individuals with Type II diabetes.
-
Lowering the risk of major cardiovascular events in people with Type II diabetes and heart disease.
-
In clinical studies, participants received GLP-1 for 68 weeks (approximately 1.5 years) during each of the four major trials.

Are there any significant health risks associated with using GLP-1?
Yes, while rare, the following health risks may occur:
-
Prolonged Vomiting: GLP-1 can cause gastroparesis, where the stomach stops moving, leading to severe vomiting. This can result in dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.
-
Action: Stop using GLP-1 and contact your healthcare provider if vomiting lasts more than 12 hours.

-
Pancreatitis (Inflammation of the Pancreas): Symptoms include severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away (with or without vomiting), which may radiate to your back.
-
Action: Stop using GLP-1 and contact your healthcare provider immediately if these symptoms occur.

-
Vision Changes
-
Action: Report any changes in your vision while using GLP-1 to your healthcare provider.

-
Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia) Risk increases when used with other medications that lower blood sugar.
Symptoms include:
-
Dizziness or lightheadedness
-
Blurred vision
-
Anxiety, irritability, or mood changes
-
Sweating or shakiness
-
Slurred speech

Hunger, confusion, or drowsiness
-
Fast heartbeat or feeling jittery

Kidney Problems (Kidney Failure) : Symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting can cause fluid loss (dehydration), worsening kidney issues.
-
Action: Stay hydrated to reduce the risk of dehydration.

-
Serious Allergic Reactions: Symptoms include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; severe rash or itching; fainting or dizziness; or a rapid heartbeat.
